Guide to Getting a Free Windows VPS with Azure
Microsoft Azure offers attractive programs that allow new users and students to experience cloud services, including creating a Windows virtual private server (VPS) at no cost.
Azure provides a powerful and flexible cloud platform.
Owning a Windows VPS is often more expensive than a Linux one. However, by taking advantage of Microsoft's programs, you can get a Windows VPS for learning, research, or running lightweight applications.
The Two Most Popular Programs
- Azure for Students: If you have a student email (.edu), you can sign up for this plan to receive $100 in credit and access to many free services without a credit card.
- Azure Free Trial: For all new users. You will receive $200 in credit to use within 30 days and 12 months of access to popular free services. This plan requires a credit card for verification but will not charge you unless you upgrade.
Basic Steps to Create a VPS
- Sign up for an account: Visit the Azure homepage and choose the appropriate program (Students or Free Trial) to register.
- Access the Azure Portal: After successful registration, log in to the Azure management portal.
- Create a Virtual Machine: Navigate to the 'Virtual machines' section and click 'Create'.
- Configure the VPS: Here, you will select the operating system (e.g., Windows Server 2019), size (choose plans marked 'Free services eligible'), and set an admin username and password.
- Deploy and connect: After finishing the configuration, Azure will take a few minutes to deploy the VPS. Once complete, you can download the RDP file and use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to your VPS.
Be mindful of the limitations of the free tier, especially regarding monthly usage hours and machine specs. The free tier is great for getting acquainted and testing, but if you have higher demands, consider upgrading to a paid plan.
